Spinifex Press is an award-winning independent feminist press publishing books across a wide variety of subject areas. Spinifex Press was established in 1991 by Susan Hawthorne and Renate Klein. It is an independent Australian-owned company which publishes innovative and controversial feminist titles with an optimistic edge. To date Spinifex has published around 6–12 titles annually. Authors are Australian and international. Spinifex publishes fiction, poetry and non-fiction. Fiction includes literary, crime and sci-fi. Non-fiction includes memoir, politics, health, travel, cyberculture with specialist lists across fiction and non-fiction in Asian and African Studies, Indigenous, feminist and lesbian titles, books on globalisation and Women’s Studies. There are specialist lists in lesbian writing as well as writing from Africa, Asia, the Pacific and the Middle East. Spinifex has been an early adopter of technologies and has been publishing eBooks since 2006. Spinifex, our namesake, is an Australian desert grass that holds the earth together.
