W HEN I went to find where they stay at night, I saw something. They said,
โWhere is Darl? Where did Darl go?โ
They carried her back under the apple tree.
The barn was still red, but it wasnโt a barn now. It was sunk down, and the red went swirling up. The barn went swirling up in little red pieces, against the sky and the stars so that the stars moved backward.
And then Cash was still awake. He turned his head from side to side, with sweat on his face.
โDo you want some more water on it, Cash?โ Dewey Dell said.
Cashโs leg and foot turned black. We held the lamp and looked at Cashโs foot and leg where it was black.
โYour foot looks like a niggerโs foot, Cash,โ I said.
โI reckon weโll have to bust it off,โ pa said.
โWhat in the tarnation you put it on there for?โ Mr. Gillespie said.
โI thought it would steady it some,โ pa said. โI just aimed to help him.โ
They got the flat iron and the hammer. Dewey Dell held the lamp. They had to hit it hard. And then Cash went to sleep.
โHeโs asleep now,โ I said. โIt canโt hurt him while heโs asleep.โ
It just cracked. It wouldnโt come off.
โItโll take the hide, too,โ Mr. Gillespie said. โWhy in the tarnation you put it on there? Didnโt none of you think to grease his leg first?โ
โI just aimed to help him,โ pa said. โIt was Darl put it on.โ
โWhere is Darl?โ they said.
โDidnโt none of you have more sense than that?โ Mr. Gillespie said. โIโd โaโ thought he would, anyway.โ
Jewel was lying on his face. His back was red. Dewey Dell put the medicine on it. The medicine was made out of butter and soot, to draw out the fire. Then his back was black.
โDoes it hurt, Jewel?โ I said. โYour back looks like a niggerโs, Jewel,โ I said. Cashโs foot and leg looked like a niggerโs. Then they broke it off. Cashโs leg bled.
โYou go on back and lay down,โ Dewey Dell said. โYou ought to be
asleep.โ
โWhere is Darl?โ they said.
He is out there under the apple tree with her, lying on her. He is there so
the cat wonโt come back. I said, โAre you going to keep the cat away, Darl?โ
The moonlight dappled on him too. On her it was still, but on Darl it dappled up and down.
โYou neednโt to cry,โ I said. โJewel got her out. You neednโt to cry, Darl.โ
The barn is still red. It used to be redder than this. Then it went swirling, making the stars run backward without falling. It hurt my heart like the train did.
When I went to find where they stay at night, I saw something that Dewey Dell says I mustnโt never tell nobody.
