16-22 May 2016

Each year, Sydney Writers’ Festival presents over 300 events, attracting audiences of 100,000 to our gorgeous harbourside location and other venues. The heart of the Festival is at Walsh Bay in heritage wharves on Sydney Harbour. There are also events stretching across Sydney, from the Opera House and Sydney Town Hall, into suburban Sydney and the Blue Mountains.

We bring together writers from various forms and backgrounds, including the best contemporary novelists, screenwriters, musicians and writers of cutting edge nonfiction, and some of the world’s leading public intellectuals, scientists and journalists. With the finest writing and storytelling at its core, our programming is driven by the ideas and issues that animate all types of literature. Previous international guests include Alice Walker, Dermot Healy, Helen Macdonald, Eleanor Catton, A.M. Homes, Roddy Doyle, Claire Messud, James Wood, Jeanette Winterson, Fatima Bhutto, Neil Gaiman, Christopher Hitchens, Alan Cumming, Vince Gilligan and many more. Australian guests include Richard Flanagan, Helen Garner, Robert Dessaix, Kate Grenville, Alexis Wright, Tom Keneally, Kate McClymont, Ali Cobby Eckermann, Omar Musa and Ceridwen Dovey

The Festival is a not-for-profit organisation, and as such, we aim to be accessible to a wide range of audiences. This objective sees us present many events for free during our May Festival, and was behind the 2015 launch of our Live and Local program, a new program that partners with local organisations to live-stream key Festival events into regional Australia.

Sydney Writers’ Festival also has a dynamic program of events throughout the year. In November 2015 we presented our annual Children’s Festival of Moving Stories, with free events for children and families across Western Sydney. We are committed to providing opportunities for children of all ages to engage with books and stories through a variety of literary experiences.

Please see our YouTube channel for a brief film on the Festival that helps bring it to life. You can read more about the experiences of authors in Sydney after attending the Festival on the SWF Blog.

The next Sydney Writers’ Festival will be held 16-22 May 2016 and there is already a rather exciting line-up in store. Our program will be launched at the end of March 2016.
