Introducing our Conference Associate Producers
This year for the first time SPN has Associate Producers on board for the Independent Publishing Conference. Over the next few weeks, they will be introducing themselves here.
First up is Nicole McKenzie, who is working on several events within the Conference.
Being a good person (and a good intern)
Hi I’m Nicole! I have showers longer than three minutes and make regular recycling mistakes, but I know that you probably do too. I’m one of the Associate Producer Interns at SPN and part of the fantastic team organising the 2016 Independent Publishing Conference.
You may think it’s strange that I began by confessing my environmental shortcomings but I promise it’s important to me right now. You see, I’m putting on a show called ‘Being a Good Person is Bloody Hard Work’ as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival. It’s all about what it takes to be a modern day ‘good person’ and involves me bringing important moral issues to the stage – do we all have to stop eating cheese? Is political correctness as important as it sounds? What’s an acceptable lie? Does any of this matter when you are watching a woman on stage in a potato sack?
When I’m not conference planning at SPN or talking to myself in my lounge room (aka Fringe show creating) I can be found in the Baillieu Library at The University of Melbourne. With a chai in hand I spend my days writing creative non-fiction and essays on gender issues as part of my final semester of a Bachelor of Arts (majoring in Creative Writing and Gender Studies).
There is so much going on behind the scenes at SPN as we prepare for this year’s Independent Publishing Conference and I cannot wait to share it with you all! As I write this we are working away, planning creative events and locking in talented speakers. We will keep you updated on the conference plans but if you are a publishing professional, student or hopeful publisher-to-be put the dates in your diary – 9th to 12th Nov – because this is the publishing event of the year.
